1,012 ECDE Teachers in West Pokot Granted Permanent Employment Status

The West Pokot County Government has fulfilled its promise to confirm 1,012 teachers as permanent and pensionable employees.

This announcement was made during a ceremony attended by over 1,600 teachers who serve in various roles across different Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) centers throughout the county.

In addition to the permanent confirmations, the county also offered contracts to 481 other teachers. However, 110 teachers were informed they needed to obtain their certificates before being eligible for contracts.

Governor’s Address and Appeal

At the event held at the governor’s official residence in Kapenguria, the governor expressed gratitude to the teachers for their patience and dedication to educating ECDE learners.

He urged the teachers to intensify their efforts to show appreciation for the government’s support.

Salary Scales for Teachers

The county government announced the salary scales for the teachers, which are as follows:

QualificationSalary (KSH)
Certificate in ECDE16,000
Diploma in ECDE19,200
Degree in ECDE26,900
Coordinators54,000

Teachers’ Concerns Over Salary Disparities

Some teachers, speaking anonymously, raised concerns about the criteria used to determine the salary packages. They indicated an expectation for salaries to align with the advisories from the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC).

Expected Salaries vs. Offered Salaries

The teachers had anticipated the following salary amounts:

  • Certificate holders expected 33,000 KSH
  • Diploma holders expected 36,000 KSH
  • Degree holders expected 59,000 KSH

The teachers expressed hope that the discrepancies between the offered and expected salaries would be addressed soon. They warned that if these issues remain unresolved, it could negatively impact their morale.
