Lugulu Girls High School has reported that 23 of its students received Y grades in their KCSE results. A Y grade signifies that the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has withheld results in one or more subjects due to suspected irregularities.
KNEC officially released the school’s Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) results two weeks after reports of withholding surfaced, alleviating anxiety among students and parents. The release, which occurred on Friday, January 17, 2025, followed a tense period for the school community.
Out of the 676 candidates who sat for the 2024 KCSE exams at Lugulu Girls, 13 students achieved grade A, 93 attained A-, and 191 scored B+. According to a circular from the school, only four students scored below the C+ university entry threshold, translating to a 99.41% transition rate.
On Saturday, January 18, students took to the streets to celebrate the results after enduring weeks of uncertainty.
The school principal, Dinnah Cheruiyot, commended the students and teachers for their collective efforts. Cheruiyot stated that the performance was a testament to the hard work and dedication of both students and faculty.
Withholding of Results
Despite the celebratory mood, reports indicated that 23 students remain affected by withheld results. A parent, speaking anonymously, alleged that the school was concealing cases of Y grades. For these students, particularly those who took music, a Y grade means their results in one or more subjects have been invalidated.
The principal, Cheruiyot, had earlier advised students and parents to remain patient as the school pursued resolution through KNEC’s official appeal processes. However, attempts by Kenyans.co.ke to obtain further clarification from Cheruiyot were unsuccessful, as she did not respond to calls or messages.
The 2024 results reflect an improvement compared to 2023, when the school recorded a mean grade of 9.328, with one student scoring an A, 63 students attaining A-, and several achieving other quality grades.

National Context of Withheld Results
During the announcement of the KCSE results, Education CS Julius Ombaga revealed that KNEC had withheld the results of 2,389 candidates nationwide. This decision was linked to suspected examination malpractices, with investigations expected to conclude within 30 days.
