453 ECDE Teachers in Makueni Converted to Permanent and Pensionable Positions
Makueni Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr. announced the transition of 453 Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) teachers from contract positions to permanent and pensionable roles.
The delay in confirming the ECDE teachers as permanent employees was attributed to budgetary constraints.
In 2014, the county government initially recruited 950 ECDE teachers on a contract basis due to these financial limitations, which postponed their transition to permanent positions. Despite the delay, the teachers remained dedicated and continued their work diligently.
In January, the first group of 497 teachers was transitioned to permanent positions. The Governor had previously assured the remaining teachers that they would be made permanent by July, a promise he fulfilled on Monday.

Governor Mutula emphasized that this initiative was not politically motivated but a reward for the teachers’ hard work, despite their modest earnings.
He stressed the importance of both national and county governments treating and remunerating teachers well, given their crucial role in shaping the future and positively impacting young children.
Investment in ECDE
Mutula highlighted the government’s efforts in investing in child-friendly infrastructure and providing essential materials to support activities such as music and digital learning in ECDE centers across the county.
He acknowledged the teachers’ struggles, noting that their low salaries of Sh5,000 to Sh7,000 were insufficient and inhumane.
The Governor announced significant salary adjustments for the teachers. Diploma holders, who were previously earning Sh20,000, will now receive Sh41,000, while certificate holders’ salaries will increase from Sh17,000 to Sh37,000, alongside other allowances. The teachers will also have the flexibility to transfer within the county.
Mutula urged the teachers to engage in continuous learning to stay updated on the latest technologies and teaching methodologies, which would enable them to provide high-quality education to young children in Makueni.
Ongoing Projects
Elizabeth Muli, the Executive Committee Member (ECM) for ICT, Education, and Internship, reported the completion of 36 out of 44 projects in the 2023/2024 financial year. Through the Anita Mbinya Foundation, the county has distributed 1,000 kitty chairs and 125 kitty tables to enhance learning in ECDE centers.
Makueni County Woman Member of Parliament, Rose Museo, commended the county government’s efforts to nurture young children.

The event was also attended by Deputy Governor Lucy Mulili, Makueni County Service Board Chairperson Dr. Nicomeus Muteti, and other senior county officials, including Devolution ECM Japheth Mang’oka, Lands and Urban Planning ECM Nicolas Nzioka, and Trade ECM Dr. Sonia Nzilani.
