The workers’ union in Migori County has intensified efforts to urge the county government to address welfare issues impacting Early Childhood Development (ECD) teachers.
This push follows the recent joining of over 600 ECD teachers to the union, signaling a collective effort to bring their concerns to the fore.
Before affiliating with the union, ECD teachers faced significant challenges in voicing their grievances to the county government.
They feared possible victimization, which hindered their ability to openly raise welfare concerns.

Key Issues Raised by ECD Teachers
According to Silvance Araja, the executive secretary of the Migori County government workers’ union, the ECD teachers have already presented several pressing issues to the county government for consideration.
- Allowance Discrepancies: There are notable inconsistencies in the travel allowances provided to ECD teachers. Araja pointed out that while certificate holders receive a meager commute allowance of Ksh.800 per month, labor laws mandate a minimum of Ksh.3000.
- Job Group Stagnation: The union also highlighted that many ECD teachers have remained in the same job group for ten years, since their initial employment, without any promotion or upward mobility.
- Re-designation Based on Education Level: Furthermore, there are teachers who have advanced their education and are yet to be re-designated to roles that match their qualifications.
