80% of Mombasa Students Miss Tertiary Education as Senate Gives Governor 7 Days Ultimatum.
The Senate Education Committee has given Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir a seven-day deadline to submit a detailed report outlining the county’s education strategy and budget allocations.
This directive follows concerns over the county’s management of the education sector, highlighted by alarming data indicating that 80% of students in Mombasa fail to transition to tertiary education institutions.
Senator Betty Montat, Chair of the Senate Education Committee, emphasized that the committee was focused on assessing the funds allocated to vocational training institutions.
The committee raised questions about the effectiveness of current education programs in addressing the needs of youth and preparing them for future opportunities. The statistics prompted the committee to scrutinize the county’s investments in technical and vocational education.
In response, Governor Nassir explained that the county had introduced the Skills Mitani program, aimed at equipping young people with market-relevant skills.
He stated that the initiative was not limited to skill acquisition but extended to include financial literacy training and the provision of essential tools after certification. The goal, he clarified, was to empower youths to become self-reliant by offering comprehensive support throughout their training journey.
Senate Committee Tours Counties for Oversight
As part of its oversight mandate, the Senate Education Committee plans to visit Kilifi County on Wednesday to continue its review of various counties’ education budgets and development plans.
The committee acknowledged that while Mombasa County had made some progress, significant challenges remained. It also noted that Governor Nassir, being in his first term, had inherited many of the issues from the previous administration.

The committee reiterated that its goal was to ensure effective use of public resources and improved access to education and training for the county’s youth.
