KNUT Advocates Hiring Chaplains in Schools to Address Discipline Issues
The Kipkelion Branch of the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) has proposed the recruitment of chaplains in schools to improve student discipline.
This call was made by the branch’s Executive Secretary, David Bore, during a recent annual general meeting (AGM).
According to Bore, the introduction of chaplains in schools is essential for maintaining discipline, particularly as corporal punishment is no longer permissible.
Bore emphasized that guidance and counseling are crucial in today’s educational environment.

He highlighted that the union’s push for chaplains aims to address the gap in maintaining law and order that was previously filled by caning.
Changes in Discipline Methods
Bore acknowledged the difficulty in amending the Child Act, which bans caning, and recognized the evolving nature of student behavior compared to previous generations.
He noted that schools must adapt to these changes and find alternative methods for discipline.
“We know that caning is outlawed under the Child Act and amending this is difficult. We have to accept that things have changed. The children we have now are not the ones we used to handle years back,” he added.

In addition, Bore expressed concern over the negative effects of inappropriate teacher-student relationships.
He pointed out that such relationships have led to adverse outcomes for students, including teenage pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
