NYS to Oversee Youths in Climate Works Mtaani Program
The Climate Works Mtaani program, an initiative to enhance Kenya’s efforts in climate change response and environmental sustainability, has assigned the National Youth Service (NYS) the role of overseeing the youth recruited.
During the 88th NYS Pass-Out Parade in Gilgil, President William Ruto highlighted the significance of the program, which is part of Kenya’s strategy to achieve the goal of planting 15 billion trees by 2032.
The President indicated that the NYS would supervise the newly recruited youths under the Climate Works Mtaani initiative, which aims to engage more young people in environmental conservation and sustainability efforts.
President Ruto directed Public Service Cabinet Secretary Justin Muturi to collaborate with the relevant ministries in implementing the program. The initiative is expected to create employment opportunities for over 200,000 youth.

The President instructed the minister responsible for NYS to work closely with the Cabinet Secretaries for Environment, Housing, and Defense to lead this initiative focused on tree planting as a response to climate change.
Transition from Kazi Mtaani
Former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s Kazi Mtaani initiative will give way to the Climate Works Mtaani program.
“I want to announce that the NYS will be supervising the cohort of young people we will shortly be recruiting under our Climate Works Mtaani initiative, which will bring more young people into greening the country and managing our environmental sustainability,” stated Ruto.
President Ruto also emphasized the ongoing contributions of the NYS to public service and national security. He praised the transformative changes within the NYS, such as the expanded intake of recruits and the development of a sustainable business model, which have reinforced the youth service’s role in various sectors.

The President acknowledged the collaboration between the NYS and the University of Nairobi Enterprise Services, which has driven growth in several areas. Notably, agricultural projects like the expansion of the Athi River have not only boosted agricultural productivity but also established NYS as a significant player in the edible oil market.
