A Kenyan teacher has written an impassioned letter to President William Ruto, raising concerns about alleged political interference in the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) recruitment process.
The teacher, who graduated in 2013, urged the president to restore meritocracy in the hiring of teachers, a practice they claim has deteriorated under the current administration.
According to the teacher, recruitment during the administrations of former presidents Mwai Kibaki and Uhuru Kenyatta was rooted in fairness and equal opportunity.
However, they allege that since 2022, political influence has taken precedence over merit.
“Politicians are seen distributing employment letters at funerals and public rallies, favoring their allies over qualified teachers,” the teacher stated in the letter, adding that this practice has sidelined many deserving educators who lack political connections.

The teacher appealed to the president to intervene and restore a merit-based recruitment system in the TSC.

“I trust in your leadership to make the necessary reforms for the benefit of our education sector and the nation at large,” the teacher stated, underscoring the need for decisive action to rebuild confidence in the system.
