Terminated KCSE Examiners Demand KNEC Fire Complicit Centre Managers for Malpractices
Examiners whose contracts were terminated due to exam cheating in their schools have raised concerns, urging the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) to take action against exam centre managers and supervisors who oversaw the malpractices.
The affected examiners, including deputy principals and teachers from Kakamega and Bungoma counties, have claimed that KNEC unfairly held them accountable for breaches of the exam process, which were allegedly facilitated by school principals and exam supervisors.
The group, whose identities remain confidential, also criticized the Ministry of Education and the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) for allegedly shielding principals who were found responsible for exam malpractices.
They expressed confusion over why KNEC did not take any action against the principals involved in the recent scandals.
In an unusual move, KNEC last week delisted thousands of examiners who were teaching at schools where incidents of exam malpractices occurred during the 2024 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exams.
KNEC’s Response to Exam Malpractices
In Kakamega County, KNEC removed at least 150 examiners from their roles due to the malpractices.
KNEC’s CEO, David Njengere, stated that the decision to retire these examiners was made to uphold the integrity of the exam marking process and to ensure that the scripts could undergo further scrutiny.
A group of 21 examiners from a school in Western Kenya expressed their frustration over the termination of their contracts, insisting they were innocent.
They argued that only the principal and three teachers were present at the school during the exams, making it unfair for them to be held responsible for the violations.
One examiner claimed that TSC’s practice of reshuffling principals often rewarded those with a history of misconduct, thereby perpetuating the cycle of exam malpractice as these principals moved from one school to another.
