KNUT Advocate for TSC Policy Change on Acting Positions for Teachers.
During the Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) conference, delegates discussed and unanimously recommended that no teacher should hold an acting position in a role beyond their job group. This practice, according to Knut, has placed teachers at a disadvantage.
The teachers highlighted that when such acting positions are eventually filled, those who held the roles temporarily are often overlooked due to their lower job group, despite their service in the acting capacity.
Knut further emphasized that acting positions should only be awarded to teachers whose grades are close to the grade required for the role, and the acting period should not exceed six months.
“Teachers have been awarded acting positions but you cannot act in a position where your grade is not near the grade required for that capacity and the acting capacity cannot exceed six months,” said Mr Oyuu.

Delegates expressed confidence that the implementation of these recommendations would empower union members to perform their duties more effectively. They believe the changes will ensure fairness and boost morale among educators.
The conference, held in Mombasa, followed a crucial meeting between Knut officials and TSC representatives in Naivasha, where they deliberated on contentious clauses in the anticipated five-year Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).
TSC CEO’s Remarks
Speaking at the delegates’ conference, TSC CEO Nancy Macharia expressed optimism that the issues raised would be resolved amicably.
She noted that the collaborative relationship between Knut and TSC has created a conducive environment to address challenges and explore ways to enhance the education sector.
