How to Add Your Child in the SHA Insurance Program.
In light of widespread registration for the Social Health Authority (SHA) scheme nationwide, the government has streamlined the process of adding children to the health insurance program.
Parents intending to register their biological child can now do so by logging into the SHA portal and inputting the child’s birth certificate number.
For children under six months of age, additional documents, including a birth notification or birth certificate and a passport-size photograph, will be required.
The government emphasized that parents must notify the Health Authority at least 14 days in advance to secure approval before initiating the process.
Spouse Registration Guidelines
Beneficiaries seeking to include their spouses in the scheme must first confirm that their partner is registered on SHA via the Afya Yangu portal.
Once this registration is complete, the process requires the spouse’s national identity number, first name, and, where necessary, a marriage certificate or affidavit for verification.

After submitting the required information, a One-Time Password (OTP) will be sent to the spouse’s registered phone number.
The partner must input the OTP to verify their status as either a contributor or a dependant. Once verified, the applicant can finalize the process by selecting the ‘submit’ option on the portal.
Government’s Commitment to Addressing Challenges
The announcement follows remarks from Health Cabinet Secretary Deborah Barasa, who reaffirmed the government’s dedication to resolving issues related to the new health scheme.
Speaking during an interview on Citizen TV on December 25, she acknowledged the transitional challenges faced by SHA beneficiaries but assured the public of ongoing efforts to enhance system functionality.
The CS highlighted the government’s approach to addressing these hurdles, emphasizing regular capacity-building efforts, mentorship programs, and supportive supervision at county and regional levels.

These measures aim to foster collaboration between health providers and stakeholders, ensuring a seamless transition for beneficiaries.
Barasa noted that the SHA program, being less than 100 days old, is still in its initial stages, and adjustments are being made to improve its efficacy through consistent engagement and system improvements.
