Hillside Endarasha Academy Starts New Term as Day School After Devastating Fire.
Parents at Hillside Endarasha Academy in Nyeri are hopeful for a positive academic year as the school re-opened for its first term on Tuesday, three months following a tragic fire that claimed the lives of 21 students.
The school resumed operations without its previously existing boarding section, which was completely shut down after the devastating blaze.
To reinforce this change, a wall has been constructed to seal off the area that once housed the dormitories for more than 300 pupils.
Now fully converted into a day school, the institution is officially registered as such, marking a significant transformation. The school’s updated setup, which includes a new color scheme, symbolizes the efforts to move forward from the fire disaster.
Parents Reflect on the Tragedy and Academic Excellence
Many parents expressed confidence in the school’s ability to deliver another successful academic year, citing the institution’s excellent track record in national exams as the primary reason for their decision to return their children.
They noted that the students had come to terms with the tragedy and were prepared to continue with their studies.
One parent, Margaret Ndirangu, explained that while the fire was unfortunate, such incidents can happen in other schools as well. She emphasized that they expected the learners to perform well academically, as they had spoken to them about moving past the tragic event.
Samuel Gitonga, another parent, shared that the excellent academic performance of the school in the past was a key factor in their decision to bring their children back. He expressed confidence that the school would continue to thrive alongside the students.

The Ministry of Education has cleared the school to continue operations, which has further reassured parents that the new academic year will proceed smoothly.
Teresa Wamuyu, a parent, noted that many families were enrolling their children, and there might even be a need for more classrooms to accommodate the growing number of students.
Ruth Ndirangu added that the school had complied with all government regulations and had undergone significant improvements. With these changes in place, she believed the institution was ready to operate without any issues.
On December 20, 2024, the school’s management informed the Nyeri High Court of its decision to permanently close the boarding facility as part of the school’s transformation into a day school.
