“Overperformance?” The Unusual Case of Lugulu Girls’ KCSE Results.
The Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) recently withheld the 2024 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) results of Lugulu Girls High School, sparking concerns and speculation among parents and students.
Contrary to claims circulating online, the results were not cancelled but withheld for further verification due to an exceptional performance by the students.
Kimilili Member of Parliament Didmus Barasa has refuted claims that the Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) cancelled the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) results for Lugulu Girls High School.
While speaking to his constituents on Saturday, January 11, Barasa clarified that the results were withheld for further verification, contrary to rumors of cancellation circulating among Kenyans.
Verification Process Explained
Barasa stated that he contacted Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba, who confirmed that the results were under review.
According to the legislator, the school’s results were flagged for scrutiny after students recorded exceptional performance in the 2024 national examinations. This prompted KNEC to conduct an additional verification process to ensure the integrity of the results.
To reassure parents and students, Barasa pledged to follow up on the matter and ensure that the verification process would be completed promptly. He added that once the process concludes, Lugulu Girls’ candidates will gain access to their results without further delays.
Barasa encouraged patience among parents and students, emphasizing that the delay was procedural and not indicative of wrongdoing. He noted that it was the first time such an issue had occurred at the school and reaffirmed his commitment to supporting the institution throughout the process.
He reiterated that withholding results differs significantly from cancelling them and assured that Lugulu Girls’ KCSE results would only face minor delays. Barasa explained that the school’s overperformance raised concerns among examiners, prompting further verification as a precautionary measure.
Ministry of Education’s Position
The MP’s comments followed a statement by Western Region Director of Education Jared Obiero, who addressed the matter on Friday, January 10. Obiero confirmed that KNEC had withheld the results for review.
He explained that such actions typically occur due to various factors, including missing marks or discrepancies, and urged the public to remain calm as the issue was being resolved.
Obiero reassured the public that there was no need for alarm, as the results would soon be released once the review process was finalized.

The withholding of Lugulu Girls’ results came a day after Education CS Ogamba announced during the release of the 2024 KCSE results that KNEC had cancelled the results of 840 candidates nationwide.
This cancellation, however, did not include Lugulu Girls High School, as their results were only pending verification.
Barasa’s statements and assurances have offered clarity on the situation, urging stakeholders to exercise patience while the examination council resolves the matter.
