KNEC Guidelines on Resitting PTE, ECDE, and DTE Courses in 2025.
The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has issued detailed guidelines regarding the administration of teacher education examinations for the old curriculum in 2025.
This circular supplements earlier communication from 4th November 2024 (Ref: KNEC/GEN/EA/EM/TE/REG/2024/01) on registration for these examinations.
Courses Under Examination
In 2025, KNEC will conduct examinations for the following teacher education programs:
- Diploma in Special Needs Education (DSNE)
- Diploma in Teacher Education (DTE) (Repeaters only)
- Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) (Repeaters only)
- Teacher Certificate in Adult Education (TCAE)
- Primary Teacher Education (PTE) (Repeaters only)
Mode of Administration
The examinations will be delivered electronically via the CBATE e-assessment portal. Principals are required to ensure that necessary ICT infrastructure and internet connectivity are in place to facilitate Continuous Assessment Tests and final examinations.
Registration Guidelines
Key Deadlines:
- Teacher trainees must register at approved e-assessment centers by 30th January 2025.
- TCAE registrations will be coordinated through the Directorate of Adult Education.

Colleges offering DSNE must meet a minimum candidate threshold of 10 trainees and fulfill e-assessment center criteria.
KNEC emphasizes that all institutions should prepare trainees adequately. Mock tests will be organized, and training for both teacher trainees and educators will be scheduled. Further details regarding the training will be communicated in due course.
Laptop Specifications for Trainees
By 15th February 2025, all trainees must possess laptops meeting these specifications:
- Licensed Windows 10 (version 22H2 or later)
- 14-inch screen (minimum resolution 1920 x 1080)
- Integrated webcam
- 256GB SSD storage
- 8GB memory
- Core i3 (6th generation or above)
- Internal battery lasting over 3 hours
- IEEE 802.11 wireless capability (ac, g, or n)
Institutional Requirements
Principals must ensure the following:
- Stable internet connectivity
- Reliable power supply during mock and summative assessments

Dr. David Njengere, KNEC’s Chief Executive Officer, highlighted the council’s readiness to support institutions through this transition. He stated that KNEC would facilitate smooth administration by providing detailed training sessions and resources.
