Teacher Beaten by Student, Suffers Injuries, Sparking Police Probe.
A shocking video of a male secondary school student engaging in a physical altercation with a teacher has ignited widespread debate on social media.
The incident, which occurred at Moruga Secondary School, has prompted police investigations. This marks the second reported case of violence involving a teacher and a student at the institution within a week.
The confrontation was captured on mobile phones by students who later shared the footage online, drawing significant public attention and necessitating a formal probe.
Details of the Incident
In the widely circulated clip, the teacher and the student are seen exchanging blows inside a classroom. During the scuffle, they fell to the floor, disrupting chairs and desks.
Witnessing students can be heard screaming, while others filmed the event on their devices. Some students attempted to intervene and stop the fight before the video ended.
Photos from the incident revealed that the teacher sustained injuries, including a bleeding nose and bruises on his cheeks and lips. Reports indicate that the altercation erupted after the teacher allegedly struck the student in the face, escalating tensions.
Police and Parliamentary Responses
Assistant Commissioner of Police South/Central Wayne Mystar stated that his officers had received the videos and were actively investigating the matter.
He confirmed that officers would visit the school to interview the principal, involved parties, and other witnesses. Mystar emphasized that such behavior would not be tolerated and assured the public of a comprehensive investigation.
Moruga/Tableland Member of Parliament Michelle Benjamin expressed alarm over the incident, describing it as troubling and indicative of deeper issues within the school.
Benjamin highlighted complaints from parents and students about alleged victimization by certain teachers. While these claims remain unverified, she noted they suggest an environment that may no longer be conducive to learning.
Teacher Assaulted Amid Intervention
Reports suggest that the teacher’s involvement in a separate scuffle between two male students may have triggered the altercation.
When the teacher attempted to de-escalate the situation, one of the students turned on him. The teacher was overwhelmed and struck multiple times before staff and students managed to restore order.
The injured teacher was treated at San Fernando General Hospital and discharged later that day.
Education Ministry and Police Action
Minister of Education Dr. Nyan Gadsby-Dolly confirmed that the student involved in the altercation would be suspended. A preliminary report has been submitted, and a detailed follow-up report is expected early next week. Gadsby-Dolly stated that further action would be determined after a full investigation.
Meanwhile, police investigations are ongoing, with officers set to revisit the school to gather additional evidence and testimonies.
