TSC to Disburse January Salaries with Annual Leave Allowance Next week.
Teachers across the country are set to start receiving their January salaries early next week. These payments will include salary enhancements as the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) incorporates the annual leave allowance into this month’s payroll.
The TSC has finalized the January payroll to facilitate salary and allowance disbursements for teachers, alongside payments for loans and other third-party deductions.
The recent payroll update also reflects the conversion of 46,000 intern teachers to permanent and pensionable terms, granting them new salaries and benefits.
New Permanent Teachers in the Payroll
The conversion covers:
- February 2023 recruits: 21,550 junior secondary school teachers and 4,000 primary school teachers.
- April 2023 recruits: 450 secondary school teachers.
- September 2023 recruits: 18,000 junior school teachers and 2,000 primary school teachers.
These teachers, having received employment and appointment letters last year, are now included in the January permanent and pensionable payroll.
Salary Breakdown for Teachers
Teachers transitioning from internship roles will enjoy improved net salaries:
- Primary school teachers: Net salary of Ksh 32,000 after statutory deductions.
- Graduate secondary school teachers (including junior secondary): Net salary of up to Ksh 47,000.
Previously, primary school intern teachers earned Ksh 13,000 monthly, while secondary school interns earned Ksh 17,000 after statutory deductions. However, the 46,000 recently converted teachers will not receive the annual leave allowance this year, as they have not met the required service period.

Comprehensive Leave Entitlements
Teachers under TSC employment are entitled to several types of leave, including:
- Sick Leave
- Annual Leave
- Compassionate Leave
- Paternity Leave
- Maternity Leave
- Study Leave
- Special Leave
- Adoption Leave
- Spouse of Diplomat Leave
Teachers are granted 30 days of annual leave with full pay for each calendar year worked. However, leave must be taken during school holidays and cannot be accumulated or carried forward.
Since December 1, 2021, TSC has automated the leave application process, requiring all teachers, including interns, to apply for leave through an online platform. The process aligns with the Twenty-Seventh Schedule of the TSC Code of Regulations for Teachers (CORT).
This automation ensures efficiency and accessibility for various leave applications, promoting seamless management of teacher welfare.
