Previous Incidents at Moi Girls High School
This recent fire incident adds to a history of similar tragedies at Moi Girls High School. A major fire in 2017 claimed the lives of 10 students. A 14-year-old student was later convicted of manslaughter after being found guilty of starting the fire to facilitate her transfer to another school.
At her sentencing, the judge stated that her intent was not to harm but to secure her removal from the institution.
The Moi Girls’ incident occurred less than two weeks after the start of the 2025 academic year on January 6. It also followed another recent fire at the University of Nairobi.

On January 15, a massive blaze razed a section of the Taifa Hall, including part of the Gandhi Wing. Firefighters had to return to the university hours later when another fire reignited at the site.
This series of fires raises concerns about the safety measures in learning institutions. One official stated, “This is a call to action for schools and authorities to improve fire preparedness and prevention protocols.” Parents have also emphasized the need for robust safety measures to ensure the wellbeing of students.
