189,000 Teachers Battle for 25,000 TSC Promotions Slots.

A staggering 189,000 teachers have applied for 25,288 promotion slots as the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) aims to elevate educators to higher grades. The commission had advertised the positions as part of its initiative to address career stagnation and move qualified teachers to better job groups.

Breakdown of Vacancies

The advertised slots included:

TSC Teacher Recruitment Guidelines for Post-Primary Institutions (Permanent and Pensionable Terms) – 2025

  • Primary Schools: 16,109 positions
  • Post-Primary Schools: 9,179 positions

The overwhelming response highlights the increasing number of teachers who meet the qualifications for promotion but remain in their current grades.

Shortlisting Details

In a notice, TSC revealed that 96,640 teachers had been shortlisted for primary school positions. These candidates are competing for sub-county-level roles. For post-primary schools, 44,043 teachers in Grades C3 to D2 have been shortlisted, while 7,224 principals and teachers in Grades D3 to D5 will face regional-level interviews.

Interview Timeline

The interviews began on January 13 for primary school teachers and will end on January 23. Meanwhile, post-primary school interviews will run from January 27 to February 7, 2025.

The commission emphasized the structured interview process across the sub-county, county, and regional levels to ensure transparency.

Teacher unions have expressed dissatisfaction with the limited number of promotion opportunities. Last year, unions such as the Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (Kuppet) demanded 130,000 promotion slots to address decades of career stagnation.

According to Kuppet, this stagnation has demoralized teachers and negatively impacted education quality.

A TSC official noted that funding limitations have contributed to delays in implementing comprehensive promotions. Kuppet, however, countered, stating that resolving career stagnation would significantly improve service delivery in schools.

Conclusion

The promotion of 25,288 teachers marks progress but remains insufficient compared to the demand. As the interviews proceed, teachers await the outcome, hoping to finally achieve career progression in their profession.
