Students Faint as Police Tear Gas Disrupts Learning at Kimathi School.
Learning at both Kimathi Secondary and Kimathi Primary schools in Manyani, Nakuru East, was abruptly halted following a protest over the mysterious disappearance of a local fisherman.
The protest centered around Brian Odhiambo, a fisherman who went missing under suspicious circumstances after being apprehended by authorities for fishing illegally at Lake Nakuru.
Residents claim that Odhiambo was last seen in the company of Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) officers, fueling suspicions that the authorities were involved in his disappearance. This has led to heightened tensions in the community, with locals demanding answers.
The situation escalated on Thursday when police responded to the growing protests by deploying tear gas near the school premises. The protest, which involved dozens of residents, quickly turned chaotic.
Students at both schools were caught in the middle of the unrest, and many fainted as a result of the tear gas. The affected students were immediately rushed to a nearby hospital for medical attention.

For much of the day, protesters clashed with anti-riot police in running battles. The protesters’ primary demand was the release of Brian Odhiambo, and they refused to disperse until they received a clear explanation for his disappearance.
One protestor was reported saying, “We won’t stop until we get answers about Brian. The authorities must explain what happened.” Another added, “We will not allow this injustice to continue.”
The incident not only disrupted normal school activities but also raised concerns over the safety of students in areas prone to such protests. Local authorities have yet to comment on the situation or provide any updates regarding the whereabouts of Odhiambo.
