Kibabii University Student Arrested for Posing as EACC Director in Bribery Scam.

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) on Monday, January 27, arrested two individuals in Bungoma for impersonating directors and defrauding members of the public.

Among those arrested was a third-year student at Kibabii University who claimed to have authority to terminate ongoing corruption investigations in exchange for bribes.

According to EACC, the suspect was working alongside an accomplice, a recent graduate from the same university. The pair had been deceiving public officials and members of the public under false pretenses.

EACC disclosed that the student posed as the Director of the EACC Kakamega Office, a fictitious entity since the Commission’s Western Regional office is located in Bungoma.

Meanwhile, his female accomplice masqueraded as a senior EACC Director based in Nairobi, allegedly claiming to have graduated in 2024 from Kibabii University.

During the operation, they demanded a bribe of Ksh150,000 from their victims, assuring them that the investigation would be dropped.

The victims, suspicious of the duo’s activities, reported the matter to EACC. The Commission organized an operation that led to the suspects’ apprehension.

Suspects Held as EACC Seeks More Victims

Currently, the suspects are detained at the EACC Western Regional offices in Bungoma, where they are providing statements. EACC has invited anyone who may have been defrauded by the two to come forward as investigations continue.

The Commission encouraged the public to contact its Integrity Centre headquarters or the nearest regional office for assistance.

EACC expressed concern about the growing trend of fraudsters impersonating its officials to extort money from unsuspecting Kenyans. The anti-corruption body urged the public to remain cautious and avoid falling victim to such schemes.

EACC emphasized that the public must remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities involving individuals claiming to be EACC representatives.
