Moi University Council Sends Vice Chancellor Kosgey on 8-Month Leave.
Moi University’s Vice Chancellor, Isaac Kosgey, has been sent on an 8-month compulsory annual leave starting January 30 to facilitate the restructuring of the institution’s management.
This decision was disclosed by the university’s council chairperson, Noah Midamba, during a press briefing on Saturday, February 1. The resolution was made following council meetings held on Thursday and Friday.
The council’s investigation revealed that Kosgey had accrued a significant number of leave days since his appointment. Midamba explained that the continuous accumulation of these days exposed the university to potential audit issues.
Citing Section 28 of the Employment Act (2007), the Public Service Human Resource and Procedure Manual 2016, and Clause 10 of Kosgey’s employment contract, the council noted that employees are entitled to 45 annual leave days. However, Kosgey’s accumulated leave amounted to eight months.
The council emphasized that taking leave is essential for employees’ health and performance. Based on these considerations, it unanimously resolved that Kosgey proceed on the extended leave.
The council also announced that Deputy Vice Chancellors Isaac Kimengi and Henry Kiriamiti had been placed on a one-year sabbatical leave. In addition, the university’s chief finance officer and legal officers were suspended pending the results of ongoing investigations.
Acting Leadership
As part of the management changes, the council appointed Professor Kiplagat as the acting Vice Chancellor. Midamba confirmed that these decisions are part of broader reforms aimed at stabilizing the university.
The current council was appointed earlier this month by Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba to restore order at Moi University.
A Kenya Gazette notice dated January 17 confirmed the appointments of Ronald Wasike, Mercy Nyambura Kanyara, Edwin Sambili, and Anne Weceke Makori as council members.
Simultaneously, the appointments of Clara Samiji Momanyi, Christopher Khaemba, Eusilah Jepkosgei Ngeny, and Susan Amlango Aletia were revoked by the CS.
These actions underscore the council’s commitment to addressing governance challenges and improving the institution’s management.
