The Secrets Behind Kapsabet High School’s 100 Years of Academic Excellence.
Kapsabet High School, a leading institution in academic performance, is celebrating 100 years of existence, earning recognition for its outstanding academic achievements. The school attributes its success to hard work, resilience, consistency, focus, and a strong sense of purpose.
The school’s Chief Principal, Kipchumba Maiyo, has been instrumental in driving Kapsabet High to remarkable national achievements since taking over in 2010.
Under his leadership, the number of Form 4 students attaining a mean grade of A plain in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) has steadily increased over the years.
The school has consistently produced some of the country’s top students, with several achieving straight As.
In the recently announced 2024 KCSE results, Kapsabet High School attained a mean grade of B+ (10.1457), reaffirming its position among the top-performing schools nationally, with a high number of students scoring straight As.
“Students work hard and achieve high marks, with their progress closely monitored by teachers—a collective responsibility that is evident when results are released annually,” said Chief Principal Maiyo.
Collaborative Efforts for Excellence
Maiyo highlighted that student progress is continuously monitored by teachers, ensuring a collective responsibility in achieving high marks.
He acknowledged the role of former students who serve as teachers and board members, emphasizing their dedication to maintaining high academic standards.
“We set a target every year, and the target is to perform better than the previous scores,” he said.
Similarly, Prof. Simon Mining, an alumnus and the Board Chair since 2019, shed light on key strategies that contribute to the school’s national success.
He pointed out that, as a national school, they admit top-performing students from the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) and encourage them to sustain excellence.
Internal Competitions and Focus on Mathematics
Mining emphasized the school’s commitment to internal academic contests, which help teachers understand students on a personal level and address their academic challenges.
Additionally, the institution incorporates a daily “Maths Hour,” based on the belief that excelling in Mathematics fosters overall academic success. The school sets annual performance targets, always striving to surpass previous records.
Financial Stability and Student Support
To facilitate effective planning, the Board has directed parents to ensure timely payment of school fees, reinforcing the importance of financial stability in school operations.
Mining noted that without students, there is no school, and the fees collected are vital in maintaining smooth operations.
“Without students, there’s no school, and school fees that are paid help in running the school,” he added.
He also highlighted that the school extends support to less privileged students through the administration and well-wishers, ensuring that financial constraints do not hinder academic progress.
Producing Leaders and Giving Back
Kapsabet Boys High School has produced distinguished individuals, including former President Daniel Arap Moi, current President Dr. William Ruto, and numerous professionals such as engineers, pilots, and doctors.
“All these alumni will surely do their best to ensure the students score high in the end,” he said.
