MKU Sends Nursing Students to German for Apprenticeship Program.
Mount Kenya University (MKU) is set to send twelve additional Nursing students to Germany for apprenticeship opportunities, following a partnership with institutions in the European country. This brings the total number of students benefitting from the program to 25, after an initial cohort of five and a second group of eight were sent earlier.
Apprenticeship at Hochschule Koblenz
Vice Chancellor Prof. Deogratius Jaganyi stated that the students would depart on Friday and arrive in Germany the following day. They would immediately begin their apprenticeship at Hochschule Koblenz University of Applied Sciences, MKU’s main partner in facilitating the program.
He emphasized that the students would gain valuable experience in the global healthcare sector, acquiring practical skills and knowledge in diverse medical environments.
“All the 12 will be leaving this Friday and will be received in Germany the following day. They will be taken straight away to Hochschule Koblenz University of Applied Sciences for the apprenticeship,” Prof. Jaganyi said.
Prof. Jaganyi further mentioned that 35 more students had expressed interest in the initiative and would soon join Cohort Four to pursue similar opportunities in Germany. The programme’s expansion aims to create more career pathways for aspiring healthcare professionals.
A crucial aspect of the apprenticeship is the requirement for proficiency in the German language. The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) has provided lecturers to train students in the language, ensuring they meet the necessary proficiency standards.
Inclusion of Medical Technologists
Dr. Mercyline Kamande, Deputy Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs and Research, announced that the programme would be extended beyond Nursing to include Medical Technologists specializing in radiology.
Additionally, an AI-driven German Language Training Program would be introduced to improve learning efficiency and increase the number of students qualifying for international apprenticeships. She highlighted that these advancements would strengthen partnerships and create more career opportunities for Kenyan students in Germany and beyond.
