Drama Festival Drama: Ruto Condemns ‘Echoes of War’ Play, Calls for Protection of Children.
President William Ruto strongly criticized former Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malala, who wrote the controversial play Echoes of War, performed by Butere Girls High School. He stressed that his administration would remain steadfast in shielding children from any harmful influences, particularly those who seek to exploit the youth for personal or political agendas.
The play has sparked heated discussions due to its plot, which depicts a Gen Z-led uprising against an oppressive regime—a narrative that many have interpreted as a thinly veiled critique of the current government.
This has placed the spotlight on Malala, the former Secretary General of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), who has since been accused of using the platform to indirectly attack President Ruto.
While addressing the audience at the National Drama and Film Festival State Concert held at State House in Nakuru County, President Ruto adopted a serious tone.
Departing from his usual lighthearted demeanor, he called on parents, educators, and stakeholders to join efforts in protecting children from external forces he described as predators, drug dealers, and manipulative individuals. He stressed the importance of preserving the minds of the youth from those pushing divisive ideologies and self-serving politics.
“I must say this as a leader and a parent, equally, we must protect our children from pedophiles, drug peddlers and predators who want to corrupt our children,” the president noted.
Ruto emphasized that Kenya should focus on unity and national pride rather than succumbing to negative influences. He declared his unwavering commitment to opposing any efforts aimed at steering the nation off course for selfish gains.

In response to the backlash, Malala denied the allegations and insisted that the play was not politically motivated. Following his release from police custody on April 10, 2025, he claimed that President Ruto was the only one taking issue with the play. He argued that the script highlights governmental shortcomings and gives voice to the frustrations of the Gen Z generation, accusing the state of curtailing freedom of expression.
“Ruto is the only person with a problem with this play, He is afraid of being told the truth. The play tells you the ills of the government and what the Gen Zs are crying about,” Malala said on April 10, 2025, shortly after being released from police custody.
