Ndindi Nyoro Honors Kiharu’s Best Principals with International Dubai Tour.
Eleven principals from day secondary schools in Kiharu have been sponsored by the Kiharu NG-CDF for a tour to Dubai, in recognition of their outstanding dedication and exceptional performance in the 2024 KCSE exams. The principals were selected from the five wards within Kiharu, based on the remarkable academic improvements recorded under their leadership.
This initiative is part of the broader “Masomo Bora” programme, championed by area MP Ndindi Nyoro. It serves not only as a reward for the principals’ hard work but also as a crucial benchmarking opportunity designed to further enhance academic standards.
During their week-long visit to Dubai, the principals are scheduled to tour internationally acclaimed educational institutions, interact with global educators, and familiarize themselves with modern teaching techniques and systems. The experience is expected to expose them to new methodologies that can be adapted to improve local education outcomes.
Among the standout figures is Gabriel Kamau, Principal of Mukangu Secondary School, who was awarded an additional benchmarking trip to Malaysia. Kamau had emerged as the top principal in Wangu ward for two consecutive years, having successfully guided over 50 students to university.
At Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, several principals shared their excitement before their departure. Mr. Joseph Ngaruiya, Principal of Vidhu Ramji Secondary School, said the experience had reignited his passion for education. “This is the first time many of us are flying out of the country. It’s not just about the travel; it’s a reward for the hard work we put in, and it’s very motivating,” he said.
Ms. Consolata Wanjiru, Principal of Maragi Secondary School, also voiced her appreciation. She stated that for years they had worked tirelessly without recognition, and being appreciated in such a manner proved that their efforts were finally being acknowledged.
Masomo Bora Programme Impact
Richard Maina, the Masomo Bora programme coordinator, observed that the initiative has significantly boosted the number of students from Kiharu joining universities and has helped to reduce school dropout rates.
Maina remarked that the MP’s bold and innovative move to sponsor the principals on a fully paid educational trip had inspired admiration and renewed hope across the constituency.
He further noted that many teachers, who had previously been demotivated by difficult working conditions and a lack of appreciation, now felt energized and supported. Maina said, “We’ve seen a significant increase in the number of students from Kiharu joining universities, especially from day secondary schools, which is a clear indicator that the programme is working.”

Beyond the international trips, the Masomo Bora programme encompasses a range of reforms aimed at transforming the learning environment. These reforms include lowering school fees in day secondary schools to Sh.1,000 per term, constructing new classrooms, laboratories, and libraries, providing textbooks, and implementing a daily school feeding programme.
According to Maina, the success of the Masomo Bora programme has drawn interest beyond Murang’a County, with other constituencies reportedly exploring the model for potential nationwide adoption. He emphasized that the programme has become a beacon of hope for both teachers and students in Kiharu, representing a complete shift in attitude and aspiration within the education sector.
