How to Repay HELB Loan from Anywhere in the World via WorldRemit.
The Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) has announced that beneficiaries can now settle their loan obligations from any part of the world. In a recent update issued on Wednesday, May 8, the agency unveiled a detailed guide showing how borrowers abroad can remit their payments through the international money transfer platform, WorldRemit.
“Wherever in the world you may be, we have made it easier for you to make an impact back home. Here is how to pay your HELB loan via WorldRemit,” the board stated.
International Loan Repayment Procedure
To begin, borrowers are instructed to visit worldremit.com and select the Bank Deposit option. Users are then required to choose their preferred currency—either United States Dollars (USD) or Kenyan Shillings (KES)—before proceeding.
The next step involves entering the amount intended for remittance and directing the funds to the Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) account number 1103266314. This should be followed by making the payment via debit or credit card, while also indicating the National ID number as the payment reference.
Once the transaction is complete, users must forward the confirmation email together with their ID number to HELB via [email protected] or [email protected].
A HELB official emphasized the importance of referencing one’s ID number during the process. “Your ID number is crucial when making repayments, especially for proper tracking and reconciliation,” they explained.
Local HELB Repayment Channels
Domestically, HELB loan repayments have moved away from conventional methods and are now facilitated through the eCitizen payment platform, accessible both by individuals and employers. Employers can submit payments via checkoff, streamlining the process for organizations.
For individual users, HELB has provided three convenient channels: the HELB mobile app, the HELB online portal, and the USSD code *642#. These avenues have simplified loan servicing for borrowers within Kenya.
Additionally, local borrowers can make repayments using popular mobile money services and through various banks across the country. A support staff member at HELB noted, “We’re working to ensure payment channels are accessible to everyone, regardless of location.”

Incentives for Timely Payments
Occasionally, the board rolls out penalty waivers and discounts on accrued fines for defaulters, particularly for those who opt for lump-sum repayments. This initiative is aimed at encouraging compliance and reducing the number of loan arrears.
One beneficiary shared their experience, saying, “I cleared my loan in full during the discount window and saved a significant amount on penalties.”
