KICD Directs Secondary Schools To Share Lab Facilities With JSS
Charles Ongondo, the Director of the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD), has urged secondary schools to share their laboratory facilities with nearby Junior Secondary Schools (JSS).
He highlighted that many JSS lack the necessary laboratories for students to conduct practical lessons.
Ongondo’s comments were made during an education day event for Rachuonyo North Sub County at Gendia Secondary School in the Karachuonyo constituency.
He announced that the government has plans to construct integrated learning resource centres in all primary schools to support JSS learners with their practical lessons.
The government intends to build laboratories in each primary school, in addition to the 16,000 grade 9 classrooms recently launched.
To address the needs of primary schools located far from secondary schools, Ongondo mentioned that mobile laboratories would be provided. These mobile labs will be equipped with the necessary science equipment for practical use by the students.
The event was attended by several notable figures, including Karachuonyo Member of Parliament Adipo Okuome and Homa Bay Director of Education Eunice Khamemba.
Ongondo emphasized the government’s commitment to implementing the new curriculum, known as the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC), to ensure it meets its objectives.

“The CBC has fully incorporated informal activities such as drama, games, and music, among others. There is also parental engagement and empowerment,” he added.
During the event, Okuome called on the Ministry of Education to increase efforts to educate the public about the new curriculum, pointing out that many Kenyans are still not familiar with it.
He believes that the new system, which is practical-based, will help transform youths from job seekers into job creators by promoting self-employment.
