President William Ruto Reappoints Prof. Joseph Mathu Ndung’u as JKUAT Chancellor
President William Ruto has re-appointed Prof. Joseph Mathu Ndung’u as the Chancellor of Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) through Kenya Gazette Notice No.
7618, dated June 20, 2024. The appointment is for a five-year term starting June 21, 2024.
Since 2022, Prof. Ndung’u has served as the Regional Director for the Geneva-based Foundation for Innovative New Diagnostics (FIND).
Before this role, he led the Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTD) division at FIND. His career began in 1985 as an assistant research officer at the Kenya Trypanosomiasis Research Institute (KETRI). By 1992, he was the deputy director of research and became the director in 1995.
Prof. Ndung’u holds a Bachelor’s degree in Veterinary Medicine and Surgery (BVM) from the University of Nairobi, and a PhD in the Immunopathology of human African trypanosomiasis from the University School in Scotland. He has published over 100 research papers.
Acknowledgments and Future Plans
Upon his reappointment, JKUAT Vice Chancellor, Prof. Victoria Wambui Ngumi, praised Prof. Ndung’u’s leadership qualities and commitment.
She stated that the Council, University Management, and the entire university community would continue to support his efforts in guiding the university towards excellence in training, research, innovation, entrepreneurship, and community service.
Prof. Ndung’u expressed his gratitude for the reappointment, viewing it as recognition of JKUAT’s governance and performance. He thanked President Ruto for the opportunity to continue serving the country in this capacity.
Previous Achievements
Prof. Ndung’u was initially appointed as JKUAT Chancellor on January 11, 2019, for a five-year term. In 2019, he received the African Union’s prestigious Excellence Award for his contributions to research and the development of new diagnostic tools for neglected tropical diseases.
