Employ JSS Teachers with Funds Allocated for MPs Salary Increase — Governor Kilonzo

Makueni Governor Mutula Kilonzo has proposed that the resources earmarked for MPs’ salary increments should be redirected towards more pressing needs, such as employing Junior Secondary School (JSS) teachers.

He argued that this would be a more beneficial use of funds, especially in light of the current economic challenges.

“If there’s extra resources, we should then check whether we can hire JSS teachers or do something else because then people are just going to hit these people for no reason,” Kilonzo suggested.

Speaking in a recent address, Kilonzo stated that the timing of this proposal is inappropriate and would only aggravate the frustrations of Kenyan citizens.

Kilonzo highlighted that Kenyans are already discontented with the current economic situation and the perceived overpayment of elected officials.

He stressed that increasing MPs’ salaries amidst such economic hardship would only deepen public resentment.

“The increase of salaries for Members of Parliament will only increase the uproar for Kenyans because Kenyans are complaining about everything including salaries to elected officials and other officials,” Kilonzo remarked.

He emphasized that even if the proposal had good intentions, its timing is fundamentally flawed.

Warning Against Favoritism

Kilonzo also warned against the perception that elected officials are receiving undue benefits, which could further alienate the public.

He urged the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) to reconsider the proposal and delay any decisions on salary increases for MPs.

“People are already upset about so many things, so this is just going to make the whole thing even worse than it is now.

We cannot appear as if a section of elected leaders are receiving more favors on top of what they already have,” Kilonzo concluded.
