ECDE Teachers in Bomet Receive 6 Months Overdue Salaries

Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) teachers in Bomet have finally received their salaries from the county government, which had accumulated over six months.

The teachers expressed that the delay, coupled with the high cost of living, had placed them in a difficult situation where they could no longer meet their families’ basic needs.

Edna Koech highlighted that the delay in salaries had placed them in a challenging position, making it difficult to educate their children. She expressed relief and happiness that the county had finally paid their salaries.

Jacqueline Chelangat echoed these sentiments, stating that the teachers were now motivated and ready to perform their duties diligently.

She also thanked the county for the milk program and the efforts to equip ECDE centers across the county.

The teachers, who had not been paid since January, had staged demonstrations and camped outside Governor Hillary Barchok’s office, demanding their payments.

Their actions were a response to the prolonged delay in receiving their due salaries.

In a statement, the county government explained that the delay was due to the postponed release of shareable revenue by the treasury.

After the release of the salaries, the county acknowledged the teachers’ patience and commitment, stating that basic education should be prioritized.

The teachers committed to working diligently and engaging with the county regarding remaining demands.

They emphasized the importance of prioritizing basic education and appreciated the county’s support in other areas, such as the milk program and the equipping of ECDE centers.
