KNUT Calls for Teachers’ Patience on CBA Implementation

The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) has urged teachers to remain patient and continue providing their services in schools as efforts are made to implement the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).

This call for patience comes amidst ongoing concerns regarding teacher shortages and funding issues in the education sector.

In a recent statement, KNUT General Secretary Collins Oyuu commended the Ministry of Education for reallocating more than 10 billion shillings to the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) budget.

This reallocation aims to recruit additional teachers, addressing the current shortfall of 46,000 educators across the country.

Oyuu emphasized that the proposed budget cut, which could have significantly impacted teacher recruitment, has been avoided.

He noted that maintaining the budget is crucial for the employment and confirmation of 46,000 intern teachers, as well as for meeting the government’s goal of recruiting up to 116,000 teachers.

The union leader highlighted the potential negative consequences of the budget cut, stating that it would have contradicted the commitments made by President William Ruto to support the education sector and ensure adequate staffing in schools.

‘This reduction would adversely affect the employment or more teachers, and the worst part of it is the fact that the confirmation of the 46,000 interns would be nowhere.”

In related news, primary school heads have reported that school programs are being severely disrupted due to delays in the release of free primary education capitation funds.

Despite numerous promises from the government, the funds necessary for the smooth operation of schools have not been disbursed, causing significant challenges for primary education.
