Arts Education in Focus: CBC Shines
The Rift Valley Regional Music Festival held at Maasai Mara University in Narok County has been dominated by the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).
The country is currently implementing the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) in schools where students are performing in areas including music, dance, cinema, and theater.
The event highlighted the significance of arts education within the context of the CBC learning process by showcasing the immense talent of young students from the Rift Valley region.
Under the CBC, the emphasis is transferred away from rote memorization and toward the development of practical skills, creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills, among other important school subjects.
By incorporating music festivals into the curriculum, it was hoped that students would have the opportunity to implement their knowledge and skills in a real-world setting, thereby promoting a holistic approach to education.
The participating schools presented a variety of musical performances, such as choral singing, traditional folk melodies, contemporary compositions, and instrumental recitals.
A council of expert judges meticulously evaluated each performance based on the CBC’s competency domains, including communication, collaboration, critical thinking, creativity, and cultural awareness.
Regional Quality Assurance Officer Lawrence Kaburu emphasized the significance of music and the arts in fostering the overall development of students.
Through music and artistic expression, we are cultivating the talent and creativity of our future leaders, he stated. CBC provides a venue for identifying and cultivating individual talents, ultimately preparing students for a world undergoing rapid change.”
Danson Mwanje, a trainer at St. Bridges Academy in Elgeyo Marakwet County, says the incorporation of music festivals into the CBC not only gives students a platform for self-expression, but also promotes cultural diversity and inclusiveness.
“By incorporating traditional music and dances, students gain a deeper understanding and appreciation of their heritage, fostering a sense of pride and identity,” Mwanje continued.
Moreover, the Regional Music Festivals provided an opportunity for instructors and education professionals to exchange ideas and experiences regarding the effective implementation of the CBC.
It enables students to learn from one another and investigate innovative teaching methods to engage students and maximize learning outcomes.
The increasing recognition of the significance of arts education within the CBC framework is demonstrated by the success of the Music Festivals.
It also emphasizes the commitment of educational institutions to foster the talents and skills of every student while preparing them for the challenges and opportunities of the twenty-first century.
