Backlash as St. Anne’s Students Locked Out of School Overnight Over Arrears.

St. Anne’s Girls School in Makadara, Nairobi, has come under fire after students were left outside the school overnight due to unpaid fees.

A video circulated by the Makadara Social Justice and Information Centre showed students stranded at the gate late at night.

The center urged immediate action, stating that students were unable to enter the school because they lacked the full payment required.

One of the affected students shared that they had been waiting outside since morning, despite paying half of the required Sh26,000 fee.

Another questioned the institution’s demand for full payment on the first day of reopening, suggesting it was an unreasonable expectation.

Public Outrage and Social Media Backlash

The incident sparked outrage on social media, with many condemning the school’s actions.

Users on platform X (formerly Twitter) demanded accountability, with Rahab Moraa criticizing the practice of locking out students so soon after schools reopened.

Another user, Kanake, highlighted the safety risks involved and called for government intervention to address such incidents.

Similar cases were reported in other areas, indicating a broader trend. One concerned citizen, Ng’ang’a Mwangi, reported that Grade 1 pupils at Ngecha Primary had been sent home early in the morning and were still roaming the streets by late afternoon, questioning the responsibility of teachers involved in these decisions.

By evening, the situation at St. Anne’s Girls School attracted the attention of the area MP, local activists, and concerned members of the public. Their collective pressure led to the school eventually allowing the students to return.

According to the Makadara Social Justice and Information Centre, the security guards at the school gate had been acting on the principal’s strict orders. However, the growing public outrage forced a resolution to the matter.

At the time of reporting, attempts to reach the school administration for comment were unsuccessful.
