Banditry Close Schools in West Pokot.
The ongoing bandit attacks in Ombolion, North Pokot Sub-County, have forced the closure of Lonyangalem Primary School, leaving the fate of learners, teachers, and locals uncertain.
The institution, located in West Pokot County, has been a frequent target of bandit raids, with the situation escalating since May 2023.
Bandits, allegedly from the neighboring Turkana County, have repeatedly vandalized the school, rendering it uninhabitable.
During a recent raid, they destroyed furniture and shattered newly installed windows. Despite efforts by the government to renovate the school, including repainting classrooms and repairing facilities, the attacks have persisted, leaving the school abandoned.
Security Concerns at the School
The insecurity surrounding Lonyangalem Primary School is compounded by the murder of the only National Police Reservist assigned to protect the institution.

Even with no students or teachers on-site, bandits continue to raid the premises, causing further damage.
Lonyangalem is not the only school affected. Over 10 schools in the area, including Kasas Primary School and Takwa Primary School, have been closed for more than two years due to recurring banditry.
The County Commissioner, Abdi, has reassured residents that all affected schools in Central Pokot Sub-County will reopen in January 2025.
