During a review meeting held at Lelian ECDE Centre in Baringo Central sub-county, Chief Officer for Education and Vocational Training, Joseph Wahiaro, expressed confidence in the teachers’ preparedness and expertise to implement the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).

He also emphasized that teachers specialized in Special Needs Education (SNE) would be included in the recruitment, ensuring all students’ diverse needs are met.

Wahiaro acknowledged several challenges within the ECDE sector, particularly the scarcity of teaching and learning resources.

However, he noted that the county administration had made significant strides in addressing this issue, providing a portion of necessary materials to ensure smoother operations.

He also highlighted the poor infrastructure in some centers, especially in Tiaty constituency, and assured the public that support for these areas would be forthcoming after teacher confirmations are finalized.

Terms of Service for Senior and Untrained Teachers

In terms of teacher contracts, the county government has introduced differentiated policies for specific groups.

Wahiaro mentioned that 326 ECDE teachers over the age of 50 would be retained on contractual terms, with the provision of gratuity, while 178 untrained teachers would receive one-year contracts.

This approach aims to retain experienced educators while balancing resources and training needs.

To facilitate the planned reforms, Baringo County is working alongside 30 ward coordinators and Principal Education Officers from all sub-counties.

The county expects these reforms to culminate in a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Ministry of Education and the Teachers Service Commission, reinforcing collaborative efforts to revamp the ECDE sector and ensure a cohesive framework for its development.
