BOM Teacher in Nyamira Dies By Suicide After Reportedly Losing Money In Aviator
Kevin Omwenga, a Chemistry and Mathematics teacher at Nyamira Boys secondary school, was discovered deceased on Thursday in what appears to be a case of suicide, as reported by area assistant Chief Johnson Manyara.
According to Manyara, Omwenga, who was employed under the Board of Management (BOM), had been grappling with substantial debts, allegedly borrowing around Ksh50,000 from colleagues, which he reportedly lost while gambling on the Aviator game.
George Onkundi, the principal of Nyamira Boys School, mentioned that Omwenga had been observed near the school premises on Wednesday but did not attend work that day.
Onkundi noted that Omwenga had been teaching at the school for the past four years under the BOM, awaiting formal employment by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC).
The principal added that Omwenga had not displayed any visible signs of distress recently.
Attempts to reach Omwenga by phone on Wednesday night and Thursday morning were unsuccessful, prompting concern among his colleagues.
Upon visiting his residence, they discovered Omwenga’s body through a window, where he was found hanging. Subsequently, local authorities were alerted to the scene.
Omwenga’s wife and their one-year-old child were reportedly away visiting his ailing mother in the village at the time of the incident.
