Bomet ECDE Teachers Demand January Salary Payments Before School Reopening
ECDE teachers in Bomet County are demanding payment of accrued salaries from the start of the year before schools reopen next week.
Just a day after JSS teachers protested for improved employment conditions in Bomet, their Early Childhood Development and Education (ECDE) counterparts want the county to address their requests before schools reopen next week.
Led by their chairman, Richard Chebusit, they highlighted that attempts to meet with the relevant personnel had failed due to their elusiveness.
Addressing the press in Bomet, Chebusit stated that he has received complaints from teachers who have not received their salaries since January.
He stated that as ECDE teachers, they had forwarded their demands to the county. They hereby wanted the county to address the demands before schools reopened. He mentioned that failure to do so would result in them downing their tools.

According to him, low salaries and delayed confirmation have disheartened teachers, who he believes play an important role in shaping children’s lives.
Chebusit indicated that many teachers are currently dealing with depression, which he described as a ticking bomb.
Chebusit expressed concern over the situation, stating that many teachers had not received salaries since January, which he deemed as inhuman. He questioned how teachers’ salaries could be withheld while expecting them to work.
He noted that in other counties, ECDE teachers had better terms, contrasting sharply with the situation at hand. Chebusit urged for the immediate intervention of Governor Hillary Barchok.

The teachers now want Governor Hillary Barchok to break his silence on the issue, vowing not to return to work once the strike begins until all of their requests are granted.
Branch KNUT Executive Secretary Desmond Lang’at stated that the union is in solidarity with the teachers and accuses the county of neglecting the tutors.
Lang’at lamented that they were supposed to follow the guidelines provided by the Salaries and Remuneration Commission, but in Bomet, they were doing their own thing.
