CBET Anniversary: Ogamba Celebrates TVET Reforms as Path to Industrial Growth.
Julius Migos Ogamba, EBS, spoke at the 1st anniversary celebration of the roll-out of the Competency-Based Education and Training (CBET) system in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions.
The event, held at Meru National Polytechnic in Meru County, also marked a decade of reforms that have revitalized and redefined the TVET sub-sector.
These reforms have been crucial in positioning vocational education as a key driver of industrial growth and youth empowerment in Kenya.
The reforms introduced over the past ten years have significantly reshaped the TVET system to better align with the needs of modern industries.
One of the most notable changes was the introduction of CBET, which focuses on developing practical skills over theoretical learning.
This shift aims to produce graduates who are well-prepared with hands-on abilities that meet industry demands.

Another important reform was the introduction of the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) framework, which allows individuals to have their informally acquired skills assessed, recognized, and certified.
This initiative enhances employment opportunities and business prospects while tapping into previously neglected talent pools.
In addition to these reforms, the roll-out of dual training in TVET institutions has combined education with industry practice, bridging the gap between classroom learning and real-world application.
This approach ensures that students receive the practical experience needed to succeed in the workforce.
Continuous Professional Development (CPD) has also been introduced to keep TVET trainers’ pedagogical and technical skills up to date with the latest trends and technological advancements.
This ongoing training ensures that instructors remain equipped to teach the next generation of skilled workers.
