Celebrating 100 Years of TVET: Government’s Strategic Vision
The Principal Secretary of the State Department for Technical, Vocational Education, and Training (TVET), Esther Thaara Muoria, emphasized the government’s commitment to leveraging the centennial celebrations of TVET to highlight its key plans and priorities in the sector.
Addressing stakeholders at Kabete National Polytechnic, she outlined the upcoming TVET-at-100 event as a pivotal platform to articulate these strategic initiatives.
Dr. Muoria underscored the crucial role of TVET in driving Kenya’s industrialization agenda. Despite significant milestones over the past century, she acknowledged persistent challenges hampering the sector’s full potential.
These challenges include inadequate awareness, low perception, insufficient financing, and limited private sector and development partner involvement.
To address these issues, PS Muoria announced plans to reposition TVET through the centennial celebrations. This initiative aims to enhance the sector’s effectiveness in fulfilling its mandate.
Transformative Growth: TVET’s Evolution Over 100 Years
Since its inception in 1924 with the establishment of the Native Industrial Training Depot (now Kabete National Polytechnic), the TVET sector has experienced substantial growth.
Originally set up to meet the demand for semi-skilled labor for Kenya-Uganda Railways maintenance, it has evolved significantly.
Key developments include the recruitment and training of TVET educators, upgrading of institutional infrastructure, adoption of Competency-Based Education and Training (CBET), retooling of trainers, and integration of Virtual Digital Infrastructure (VDIs/Jitume Labs) for digitalization.
Additionally, the sector has seen the launch of Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) and the reinstatement of the Technical and Vocational Education and Training Curriculum Development, Assessment, and Certification Council (TVET-CDACC).
Nationwide Engagement: TVET Torch Roadshow
The ongoing TVET-at-100 celebrations are marked by a nationwide torch roadshow across all 47 counties.
Initiated by President Dr. William Ruto at Nyeri National Polytechnic on March 26, this roadshow aims to dispel misconceptions about TVET and promote its role in enhancing employability and fostering entrepreneurship among youth and adults.
PS Muoria emphasized that the celebrations are themed around promoting employability, mobility, decent work, entrepreneurship, and lifelong learning.
