CEMASTEA Calls on Government to Boost Funding for Teacher Training Amid CBC Implementation.

The Centre for Mathematics, Science and Technology Education in Africa (CEMASTEA) has appealed to the National Government to allocate increased funding to support the retooling and retraining of teachers. This is seen as crucial for the successful implementation of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC), which is progressively being introduced across the country.

Following a weeklong Lamu County Principals’ workshop, CEMASTEA’s Deputy Coordinator for STEM, Martin Mungai, stressed the importance of empowering educators as the CBC progresses into Grade 10. He emphasized that for the curriculum to be effectively embraced, especially in junior secondary schools, teachers must be equipped through comprehensive training

Mungai also highlighted that beyond training, the government must provide additional support through facilities and resources. He pointed out the need for well-equipped laboratories and learning tools to facilitate the teaching of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) subjects, which are integral to the CBC framework.

He further indicated that teachers must maintain a receptive and proactive approach towards the curriculum, acknowledging that their attitude plays a significant role in ensuring the success of the new system.

Echoing Mungai’s views, Lamu’s Deputy Director of Education, Shumi Ali Mohammed, remarked that workshops such as the one held in Lamu are essential. She explained that such forums offer valuable guidance on the intended methods of delivering the CBC and help align educators with the goals of the new system.

Shumi also underlined the ongoing sensitization efforts aimed at fostering collaboration among teachers, parents, and school leaders.

According to her, a collective and optimistic approach, especially towards teaching STEM subjects, will significantly enhance student achievement. She observed that the CBC’s learner-centered model is a substantial shift from the previous 8-4-4 system, which was more tutor-directed.
