CEMASTEA Launches Training for 8,563 STEM Teachers in Junior Secondary School.
A large-scale training initiative for Junior School STEM teachers has been launched by CEMASTEA, aiming to enhance digital learning through virtual labs and educational resources.
The program will run for four days, from February 26 to March 1, 2025, during the Term I midterm break across SMASE INSET Centres in all 47 counties.
However, reports indicate discrepancies in the teacher selection process, prompting urgent corrective measures.
The training targets 8,563 Junior School teachers specializing in Mathematics and Integrated Science. It is designed to equip educators with the necessary skills to utilize virtual labs and open educational digital resources, thereby strengthening STEM education at the junior school level.
Issues in Teacher Selection and Required Corrections
Recent findings have revealed errors in the teacher selection process. In response, CEMASTEA has directed the CTCDC to disregard previously issued lists and instead identify qualified teachers based on the following criteria:
- Teachers must have attended CEMASTEA JS training in 2023 or 2024.
- They must currently be teaching Mathematics, Integrated Science, or both.
Selection guidelines include:
- Choosing only one teacher per Junior School.
- Ensuring gender balance and equal representation for Mathematics and Integrated Science teachers.
- Adhering to county-specific allocations as per Annex I.
Logistics and Financial Support for Participants
To ensure smooth execution, CTCDC has been tasked with preparing the training venues, acquiring necessary materials within the approved budget, and ensuring that JS County Trainers trained in December 2024 attend an induction on February 24, 2025.
Additionally, CTCDC will:
- Provide a daily allowance to participants for accommodation and transport.
- Ensure that all expenses remain within the allocated budget.
- Oversee attendance and maintain detailed records using templates provided by the CEMASTEA Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) team.

Monitoring, Reporting, and Trainer Evaluation
CTCDC-appointed officers will oversee and document the training process. A final report must be submitted to CEMASTEA within two weeks after the program’s completion.
Furthermore, designated CTCDC coordinators will evaluate JS County Trainers post-training using a standardized appraisal form.
This initiative marks a significant step toward improving STEM education in Kenya, ensuring that teachers are well-equipped to integrate digital resources into their classrooms.
