CEMASTEA Trains Meru School Principals on Managing Grade 10 Students.
The Centre for Mathematics, Science, and Technology Education in Africa (CEMASTEA) is conducting a three-day workshop aimed at preparing secondary school principals in Meru County to manage grade 10 learners starting next year.
This training is a part of the ongoing efforts to implement Competency-Based Education (CBE), which is set to begin with grade nine learners transitioning to senior school in 2026.
The workshop is designed to ensure that principals understand their critical role in the successful implementation of CBE. The focus of the training is on preparing them to manage the transition of students into senior school.
CEMASTEA has organized the session to equip the principals with knowledge of what is expected during this shift and how to effectively handle the upcoming changes.
“We are waiting for the first batch of students next year for grade 10 and so the team from CEMASTEA is inducting us on what is expected and how it will be done. We have already learnt that we shall have the learners classified into three: those that will take Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM); Social Sciences; and Sports and Arts,” said the County’s Kenya Secondary School Heads Association (KESSHA) chairman, Karani Mbui.
The workshop covers the classification of learners into three main streams: Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM); Social Sciences; and Sports and Arts.
Senior schools will accommodate students from junior schools, with 60 percent allocated to STEM, 25 percent to Social Sciences, and 15 percent to Sports and Arts. This distribution will guide how the students are grouped and supported as they advance.
The training is part of a larger, ongoing effort to ensure readiness for the new education system. The workshop is expected to continue throughout the year, providing further preparation for both the educators and the infrastructure needed to accommodate the learners. The Ministry of Education is working to ensure that schools are equipped to handle the new cohort, and this workshop serves as a crucial step in that preparation.
Training Outcomes
By the end of the training, the principals will be able to describe the Basic Education Curriculum Framework and its application for CBE. They will also be equipped to explain the components of the STEM Pathway, Tracks, and Subjects, as well as outline the basic requirements for providing the STEM pathway in their schools.
Additionally, the workshop aims to help principals understand their role in ensuring a smooth transition for grade nine learners into senior school.

The training initiative is being rolled out in 50 centres across all 47 counties. A wide range of facilitators, including those from CEMASTEA, the Teachers Service Commission (TSC), the Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC), the Kenya Institute of Special Education (KISE), and County Trainers, are leading the sessions.
This collaborative effort aims to prepare both principals and educators for the successful implementation of the Competency-Based Education system.
