Concerns Rise Over the Midyear KCSE Examinations.

Uncertainty clouds the future of students planning to retake the KCSE examinations midyear following a recent High Court ruling. The court suspended the registration process for the July series exams after activist Dr. Mgar Giki filed a petition.

He argued that the process infringed on children’s rights, raising both legal and ethical concerns. The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) had announced plans to administer midyear KCSE exams annually, a policy now facing challenges.

Education Principal Secretary Belio Kipsang reassured stakeholders of the government’s commitment to comply with the court’s directive. Speaking during the launch of Grade Seven classrooms at Mufores Academy Primary School, he emphasized that no student would face disadvantages.

The Ministry of Education, in collaboration with the Attorney General’s office, plans to address the matter in subsequent legal stages while ensuring fairness to all affected candidates.

“The Attorney General’s office, together with ourselves, will be able to respond to the case and take it to the next stages.”

KUPPET Supports Ruling Over High Fees

The Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) has endorsed the High Court’s decision. The union highlighted that the registration fees for the midyear exams were unaffordable for many candidates.

They stressed the importance of equitable examination opportunities for all students. KUPPET also advocated for a return to the previous system, where repeat candidates sat their exams alongside regular students.

As the debate unfolds, concerns persist about the fate of candidates who had planned to improve their KCSE grades in July. The suspension, which occurred on the eighth day of registration, has left many students and stakeholders in limbo.

Advocacy for accessible, inclusive, and fair examination systems continues as discussions over the implementation of midyear exams intensify.
