Cooperative University Staff Arrested for Demanding Ksh.50K Bribe to Resolve Student Results Issue.
An ICT officer at the Cooperative University of Kenya has been taken into custody by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC).
The officer, Evans Matiro Watenya, allegedly demanded a Ksh.50,000 bribe from a student in order to correct an error in her examination results displayed on the university’s portal.
The issue arose when the student noticed that her examination results had been changed from a Second Class Honours, Upper Division to a Lower Division.
This change occurred mysteriously two months before her scheduled graduation in December.

Upon inquiring about the altered results, Watenya reportedly informed her that the only way to rectify the situation was by providing him with Ksh.50,000, which he referred to as a “tea” payment.
Student’s Report Leads to Arrest
The student, unable to raise the full amount, managed to collect Ksh.30,000 but decided to report the case to the EACC instead of proceeding with the payment.
Following her report, EACC investigators conducted a probe and subsequently arrested Watenya on Friday evening.

The suspect is currently being held at Kilimani Police Station, where he awaits arraignment.
According to EACC Spokesperson Eric Ngumbi, the arrest came after the commission verified the student’s complaint and completed preliminary investigations.
