Crisis as Male Teachers Dominate TSC Firings, Face Jail Over Schoolgirls.
The education sector is currently facing a significant crisis, as male teachers are experiencing a loss of internship and permanent employment opportunities, with some facing lengthy prison sentences due to defilement cases.
It is concerning that some of the individuals affected are educators in senior administrative roles within schools, while others are newly appointed teachers who have recently received their TSC numbers.
Recently, TSC released a list of educators who were deregistered and dismissed from service due to gross misconduct in October 2024 and February 2025.
A total of thirty-four teachers were identified, all of whom were male. Among them, thirty were deregistered due to allegations of carnal knowledge (CK), defilement, and inappropriate interactions with female students.
The recent cases involving a teacher being escorted to jail to serve a twenty-five-year sentence and another dismissed by the TSC for inappropriate conduct with a student on Instagram highlight the serious repercussions that male teachers may face if they do not approach their profession with the utmost seriousness.
A high school teacher has been dismissed and permanently barred from the teaching profession due to allegations of inappropriate conduct with a teenage student on social media.
TSC implemented decisive measures following the discovery of the teacher’s involvement in flirtatious exchanges with a student on Instagram.
The dismissal of the teacher was subsequently contested in court; however, the Employment and Labour Relations Court in Nairobi affirmed the decision made by the TSC.
The court determined that the teacher’s conduct was inappropriate and breached the ethical standards anticipated of educators.
This situation underscores the increasing apprehension regarding the inappropriate use of social media by individuals in roles of responsibility.
This ruling emphasizes the importance for educators to maintain exemplary moral and ethical standards, ensuring that their conduct does not jeopardize their integrity or the safety of their students.
The High Court in Mombasa has reversed the acquittal of a former primary school teacher who was accused of repeatedly defiling a 10-year-old pupil in 2020.
Before Justice Ann Ong’injo, who was examining the 2023 case, Joseck Okumbe was found guilty of the sexual assault charges and received a sentence of 25 years in prison.
The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) has filed an appeal against the decision made by the magistrate court in 2023, contending that the lower court overlooked substantial evidence.

The High Court, upon examining the evidence, rejected Okumbe’s defence and determined that the accused was familiar to the victim in the capacity of their teacher.
The court concludes that the prosecution has met its burden of proof beyond a reasonable doubt. The decision of the trial magistrate has been overturned. Justice Ong’injo ruled, “The respondent is convicted for the offence of defilement and sentenced to serve imprisonment for a period of 25 years.”
Okumbe is reported to have sexually assaulted the 10-year-old child on multiple occasions between October 12 and 19, 2020, at the school premises in Kisauni.
