CS Mutua Meets KNUT to Prevent National Teachers’ Strike
In a proactive effort to prevent a potential teachers’ strike, Dr. Alfred Mutua, the Cabinet Secretary for Labor and Social Protection, today convened a crucial meeting with officials from the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT).
The discussion focused on resolving key issues arising from the 2021 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), which has been a source of tension between teachers and the government.
The meeting took place at the Cabinet Secretary’s office and was a response to escalating tensions within the teaching sector.
The discussion comes amidst rising discontent among teachers, with reports suggesting that a national strike could be imminent if the issues at hand are not resolved.
The KNUT officials presented several grievances to the Teacher Service Commission (TSC) and sought the intervention of the Labor Ministry to address these concerns.
“I want to promise the teachers of this country that we are taking every other step into consideration to have the matters addressed.” Said Oyuu during a press briefing.
During the meeting, KNUT officials welcomed Dr. Mutua’s involvement, acknowledging his assurance that the matter would be addressed within a week.
The primary focus of the meeting was to foster a cooperative relationship between employers and employees, aiming to enhance productivity and resolve disputes amicably.
Dr. Mutua reiterated his promise made during his vetting process to tackle issues promptly and seek harmonious solutions that benefit both parties.
Key Points from the Meeting:
CS Mutua emphasized the importance of maintaining industrial harmony and fostering continuous engagement in the labor sector. He highlighted that avoiding strikes is crucial for enhancing productivity and ensuring smooth functioning within the education sector.
The union had raised concerns regarding delays in implementing the second phase of the 2021 CBA. Specific issues included the operation of the teachers’ medical scheme, non-remittance of salary and loan deductions, and delays in the payment of retirement benefits for teachers exiting the service.
Dr. Mutua assured the teachers that the government is committed to addressing these issues promptly. He expressed appreciation for the union’s patience and reiterated the government’s intention to work collaboratively with the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) and the Ministry of Education to find effective solutions.
CS Mutua noted a shift in the approach to handling such issues, emphasizing a proactive strategy to resolve problems before they escalate. This change aims to prevent future disruptions and enhance the efficiency of addressing teachers’ concerns.
The Cabinet Secretary has pledged to engage with the employer to address the grievances raised by the teachers.
