CUE Cracks Down on Unaccredited Institutions Awarding Certificates.
The Commission for University Education (CUE) has raised concerns over unaccredited institutions issuing academic qualifications, asserting that this practice contravenes the law.
CUE reiterated that the Universities Act expressly prohibits any entity from providing university education without government accreditation.
In a press statement released on Tuesday, December 24, CUE emphasized its commitment to upholding standards in higher education.
The commission warned that it would take legal measures against individuals or organizations found guilty of operating institutions of higher learning without proper accreditation.
CUE urged Kenyans to confirm the accreditation status of universities and their programmes by visiting its official website at https://cue.or.ke/index.php/status-of-universities.
The commission underscored that issuing academic certificates without accreditation is a breach of the Universities Act.

As part of its advisory, the commission highlighted that the public should avoid unaccredited institutions, as their qualifications would not be recognized under Kenyan law.
Investigation Into Northwestern Christian University
CUE announced that it had launched investigations into the alleged awarding of degrees by Northwestern Christian University.
The commission revealed that legal action would follow once the investigations were concluded, citing the institution’s violation of accreditation laws.
The commission noted that Northwestern Christian University’s operating license had been revoked in 2023 through a public notice in local newspapers.
Despite this revocation, the institution reportedly continued its operations unlawfully. CUE clarified that any qualifications issued by the university are invalid and would not be recognized in Kenya.
EBK’s Directive on Honorary Doctorate Degree
This announcement coincides with the Engineering Board of Kenya (EBK) ordering Northwestern Christian University-Kenya to revoke the honorary doctorate degree it awarded to Kapseret Member of Parliament Oscar Sudi.
The degree, conferred on Saturday, December 21, during the university’s 17th graduation ceremony, included the professional title “Engineer.”

EBK revealed that the decision was prompted by numerous public complaints regarding the misuse of the title “Engineer” in the honorary degree certificate. The board directed the university to withdraw the certificate immediately.
