Defiant Teachers Flee As KUPPET Storm Schools
Demonstrators from the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) stormed two secondary schools in Machakos on Tuesday, forcing the teachers to flee.
The protests erupted after reports surfaced that some teachers at Machakos Township Secondary School and Machakos Girls High School were continuing classes despite an ongoing strike.
The Machakos Police Station called in police officers to stop the demonstrators from causing a disturbance.
The situation at Machakos Girls High School escalated near the school gate, prompting police to stop the demonstrators.

Police only allowed a few protestors to enter the premises, where they confronted the school principal. The principal assured them that no teachers were present in the school.
Union Leadership’s Firm Stand
KUPPET Secretary General Musembi Katuku expressed the union’s strong stance against any teachers who defied the strike. He conveyed that the fleeing teachers were aware of KUPPET’s impending arrival, reiterating that the strike was in full effect.
He emphasized that no student should attend school until the government addresses their grievances.
Meanwhile, at Machakos Township Primary, KUPPET Chairperson Bernard Warui reinforced the union’s determination to ensure teachers remained out of schools during the strike.
The teachers spent much of the day demonstrating in Machakos town, showcasing their commitment to the cause.

These demonstrations occurred despite the Employment and Labour Relations Court’s temporary suspension of the nationwide strike by KUPPET.
The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) filed a case on Monday, naming the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection as an interested party, which led to the court’s decision.
The incident underscores the escalating tensions between the teachers’ union and the government as they await further legal determinations.
