Education Ministry Closes Boarding Sections in 348 Primary Schools: Full List Per County.
The Ministry of Education has mandated the immediate shutdown of boarding facilities in 348 primary schools nationwide due to non-compliance with safety and operational standards.
This directive follows a thorough safety evaluation conducted between September and October 2024.
The assessment, which focused on adherence to Safety Standards for Basic Education Institutions, revealed gross violations in the identified schools.
Key concerns highlighted during the evaluation include:
- Dormitory safety measures.
- Inadequate sanitation facilities.
- Poor maintenance of fire equipment.
- General learner welfare issues.
In a circular issued on November 27, 2024, Education Principal Secretary Belio Kipsang instructed regional, county, and sub-county directors of education to enforce the closure of these schools’ boarding sections. The schools are expected to transition to day schools by January 2025.
Impact on Affected Schools
Nairobi has the highest number of affected schools (44), followed by Kericho (26), Uasin Gishu (19), Nandi (15), Kisii (13), and Kiambu (13).
The closures stem in part from a tragic fire incident in September 2024 at Hill Side Endarasha Academy in Nyeri County, where 21 boys died in a dormitory fire that also caused injuries and extensive property damage.
Parental Responsibility
With schools set to reopen in January 2025, parents now have less than two months to make alternative arrangements for their children, as the affected institutions will no longer offer boarding services.
