Education Ministry Extends Funding Appeals Deadline to December 31

The government has reaffirmed its dedication to ensuring a fair and transparent process in disbursing higher education funds, emphasizing that all deserving students will receive support.

As part of the ongoing efforts to provide financial aid, the government has initiated the processing of appeals for re-categorization of funding applications. This process is expected to conclude within three weeks from the date of each appeal submission.

The Higher Education Portal, which is open for this year’s application cycle, has already received 134,029 applications for loans and scholarships. Out of these, 127,591 applications have been categorized into different funding bands.

However, 12,958 applicants have appealed for re-categorization, seeking reassessment based on updated information.

Verification Process and Multi-Agency Approach

The government has stressed that the re-categorization process will be based on the accuracy of information provided by applicants, including their socio-economic backgrounds, affirmative action considerations, socio-demographic factors, and family education expenses.

To ensure fair categorization and appropriate financial aid, the government is employing a multi-agency approach.

This approach involves officers from the National Government Administration Office, who will verify the information provided by applicants within their respective jurisdictions, covering all 106,600 villages across the country.

This collaborative effort highlights the government’s commitment to ensuring that no student is denied deserved funding due to incorrect or incomplete data. The multi-agency approach is designed to enhance transparency, efficiency, and accountability, ensuring that decisions are made based on accurate and verified information.

Integrity and Financial Disbursement

The government has urged all applicants to act with integrity and diligence when providing their socio-economic details, noting that the accuracy of this information will be crucial in determining funding eligibility.

In addition to these efforts, the government has already disbursed Ksh 5.2 billion to the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) for tuition and upkeep loans, and Ksh 2.8 billion to the Universities Fund for scholarships.

These funds are currently being transferred to the respective university and student accounts, pending verification of student admissions and reporting. The disbursement process is expected to be completed by August 30, 2024.

Extended Deadlines and Accessibility

For students who have not yet submitted appeals, the government has kept the Higher Education Portal open until December 31, 2024, allowing for the submission of late appeals if necessary.
